York Regional Support Group Tuesday 28 November 2006 Title: Dance & ELL Speaker(s): Yannick Minvielle-Debat Venue:York St John University There was once again a very large turn-out of teachers, TAs, and ITT students for this practical session, led by Yannick, in a Drama studio at York St John. Yannick convinced us that the best way to internalise the dances & instructions was by taking part, so we got up to dance!!! The first dance was a circle dance, and with a few phrases, we discovered how the foreign language could easily be embedded into a practical activity, and of course it was fun. Yannick interspersed the dances with advice about organisation & management of classes, and suggested ways in which older or more experienced dancers & language learners could still be challenged. She provided handouts and offered to send them electronically so they could go on our Comenius web pages. Thank you Yannick for a super session! Firstly Yannick Minvielle-Debat led us in a session of Breton dancing. We all thoroughly enjoyed the dancing and insight into French culture, but could also see how this could be used to reinforce language learning. Jean 'Petit qui Danse' provides an active, rhythmic and fun activity to practice parts of the body. This will be ideal for performance and I confidently expect to see this again at one of our celebrations of primary languages in the summer term. Delivery was through a mixture of practical activities, workshops and speakers so that our 50+ excited delegates were offered a rich and varied diet, including a delicious lunch! The morning began with the usual networking opportunities over coffee and then we were into our first session led by Yannick Minvielle-Debat who had proved so popular at the Primary Languages Show in Manchester earlier this year. Everyone "tripped the light fantastic" with Yannick for an hour or so, learning traditional, simple French dances which have the potential to engage and enthuse our children in their learning, hitting a range of buttons across the curriculum and in particular providing opportunities to develop intercultural understanding. This session was hugely popular and engaged our delegates in a very enjoyable and practical way – no sitting around then! Wakefield Inset, Teachers Training Tue, 19 Feb 2008 Yannick, A formal letter of thanks is on its way to you from my admin support. All the teachers thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, as the evaluations testified. Many many thanks and well done! Rachel Hi Yannick, I attended your French dance training yesterday and this morning taught my children a couple of the dances. They absolutely loved it and I was so shocked to see the boys and girls dancing together without making a fuss! Many thanks for your excellent tutoring! Laura Gallagher 4th February 2008 Dear Yannick Thank you to you both again for the fantastic time - everyone thoroughly enjoyed and I hope the rest of your visits to local schools went really well. No doubt we'll see each other en passant at the Primary Languages Show. Looking forward to hearing from you Cynthia Reading RSG Hull Education Centre, Coronation Road North, Hull HU5 5RL Date: 17/06/2008 Title: French dance in the primary school Venue: St Mary's College Speaker: Yannick Minvielle-Debat This was the last RSG of the year and involved lots of physical exercise. Our visiting speaker, Yannick Minvielle-Debat, certainly put us through our paces as we danced around the hall in a snake or in rows. The music to accompany these wonderful dances was provided by Robin who played either on the fiddle or on the accordeon. The evening was very enjoyable with lots of explanations given about the origins of the dances. Yannick made the instructions very simple in French for colleagues to follow. Her lively and entertaining approach made the time fly by. 25 teachers and TAs were again put through their paces as they danced to songs such as Jean Petit. Yannick ended the session by encouraging us to sing in French whilst dancing with our eyes closed. Sounds difficult? Not a bit of it. Participants commented on how relaxing the whole experience was. Yannick left us with instructions of the dances she had taught us along with the lyrics to the songs. Great night. Un grand merci! CiLT I am writing to thank you very much for your participation as a speaker at the Primary Languages Show. We very much enjoyed having you with us. You're input was greatly appreciated and gave delegates food for thought. Without your significant effort we would not have achieved such recognition. Tameside Primary Languages Conference Thanks for yesterday Yannick - it was absolutely brilliant - delegates really rated your session as an outstanding start to the day! Somerset Primary Strategy Thank you so much for coming to our conference! The feedback has been 100% positive! The teachers just LOVED the dances! |
